WHATS IN A NAME??????????????

(This post pertains only to the intro classes at the beginning of the sem. The staff is referred to as 'she' since there are hardly few male teachers.)

The best part about the roll call is that it takes up at least 3 minutes of the interminable, insipid and monotonous class and lemme tell you about the worst part this is how it goes
‘…..Arun “present mam” ,Ashwin “present mam” , ‘Balasubramanian’ she starts looking expectantly at the guys side, and when the “present mam “ comes all the way from the girls side she looks blanked out and looks back into the register to make sure if they have called out the right name and then sees the ‘Pournima’ beside it and then gives an apologetic smile and to the few who are bothered to ask for an explanation ,Pournima has to talk about Kuwait and legal documents.., they nod halfway and proceed ‘Buveneshwari’ “present mam” and then there is a moment of silence where the staff stares at the register with an uncertain expression and then in a hesitant tone says “Dupin” and there is a ripple of laughter all around the class , and before risking another try I warily say “present mam”. At this point few staffs move on to the next name to hide their 'puppy shame' in not being able to pronounce my name right whereas the others try to find fault with my name and demand to know the etymology. So Great Me mumbles something .
So here my venting begins: Now come on guys you can do better than that its just “Daphne Madonna Esther” and not “Tynisheida Naquellahi Brishonda” (I swear this name exists)
Well Dupin is not the only version of my name there are others too like for example “Dupny, Dolphny, Dapnay…. And the list goes on even to some really weird ones that cant even be repeated . It’s really disappointing that people, who ‘claim’ to know the complicated subjects in engineering don’t even know that the ‘ph’ makes an ‘f’ sound(doesn’t mean that I’m very knowledgeable at all the phonetic stuff or anything, but the ‘ph’=’f’ is pretty basic stuff)
And to everyone who bugged me for the meaning, This Is It, ‘Daphne’ is a Greek name and it’s the name of the daughter of a river god , she was a nymph who was transformed into a laurel tree to escape the amorous Apollo.(but I don’t think my parents were aware of all this info when they named me , they jus wanted a name with a letter ‘D’ to rhyme with those of my cousins) why I don’t explain the meaning of my name is that I didn’t wanna answer the questions who is Apollo? What is a nymph? Etc . the meaning of my other names might not be so complicated but Madonna means ‘virgin’ and Esther means star (it’s also the name of my grandma and a queen in the bible so all my cousins too share this name )
Either way its fun to have that name as I am one of the ppl in the class with the longest names and also I am very proud of the fact that my name is a combo of many things such as Daphne is a protestant name, Madonna is catholic and Esther is jewish
And whats more the ultimate queen of pop Madonna also changed her name to Esther …Daphne is also the name of the beautiful girl in Scooby doo and a frequently occurring name in the books of Danielle Steel and Enid Blyton …Anyways I really loooooooovvveee my name no matter what/why/how it bothers people.
After all, whats in a name???????????

thanks pooja, i dont blame the protagonist of 'namesake' for not liking his name, i think 'gogol' is a weird name and hard to be liked.
